Description
Trade the city for open skies on this full-day journey from Los Angeles into the striking landscapes of Southern California’s desert and mountains. From roadside icons to national park scenery and alpine views, this experience brings together some of the region’s most memorable contrasts.
The day begins with a drive east as urban scenery fades into wide desert stretches dotted with wind turbines and rugged terrain. A quick stop at the famous Cabazon Dinosaurs offers a fun introduction to the route, these towering roadside figures have become a classic Southern California photo spot.
Continuing onward, arrive at Joshua Tree National Park, where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet. Known for its twisted Joshua trees and massive boulder formations, the park feels almost otherworldly. Stop at the entrance sign for photos before heading deeper into the landscape. At Hidden Valley, walk among towering rock formations and unique desert flora while taking in the quiet beauty of the surroundings.
Along the route, pass notable landmarks like Ryan Mountain, Quail Springs, and Jumbo Rocks, each showcasing a different side of the park’s terrain. A stop at Skull Rock reveals one of Joshua Tree’s most recognizable natural formations, shaped over time into its namesake silhouette. At Keys View, take in sweeping panoramas across the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountain ranges.
As the journey winds down, travel back to Los Angeles with views along the way. In just one day, experience the dramatic range of Southern California’s landscapes, from desert floor to mountain peak.
