Description

Fontana di Trevi Underground is a not-to-miss experience. Every day the Trevi Fountain charms millions of people with its beauty, captured on the silver screen by Federico Fellini in his most iconic film, La Dolce Vita, where the beautiful siren Anita Ekberg dives into the fountain waters.

Every day visitors toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, with the promise to come back to Rome. However, few people know the underground passages stretching out under the Trevi Fountain, where the remains of this ancient aqueduct are visible.

“Vicus Caprarius – the City of Water” is the impressive archaeological area located underground beneath the Trevi Fountain. These are the remains of one of the 11 aqueducts built by the Romans, whose poetic name, Aqua Virgo, means “pure water”, referring to the purity and clarity of the water. According to another romantic legend, thirsty Roman soldiers were led to a water spring by a beautiful young lady (virgo in Latin), after whom the aqueduct was then named.
Vicus Caprarius came to light during the renovation works of the former Cinema Trevi in 1999, and finally opened in 2004. The site is one of the best examples of the historical stratification of Rome.

With the Trevi Fountain underground experience, you will also enjoy a visit to a domus of the Imperial era, to the medieval houses and the “castellum aquae” of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, the monumental water tank built by the Emperor Hadrian to optimize Campo Marzio water supplies.
