Description
Long before St. Peter's, this was the heart of the Christian world. On this private walking tour you'll explore the Lateran complex with a passionate local guide who turns centuries of history into a story you can follow.
Begin inside the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome and the first church of the popes. Beneath its soaring nave, lined with monumental statues of the apostles, you'll learn why it's called the "Mother and Head of all Churches" and how it shaped the early Church.
From there, step into the tranquil 13th-century Cloister, one of the loveliest corners in Rome, where slender paired columns and glittering Cosmatesque mosaics enclose a quiet garden far from the crowds.
Cross the square to the Lateran Baptistery, founded by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century. Its octagonal plan became the model for baptisteries across the Christian world, and its porphyry columns and early frescoes still carry the weight of seventeen centuries.
Finish at the Scala Sancta, the Holy Stairs. According to tradition these are the very steps Christ climbed to face Pontius Pilate, brought to Rome by St. Helena. Pilgrims still ascend them on their knees, and above them sits the Sancta Sanctorum, once so sacred that only the Pope could enter.
- Modest dress is required — shoulders and knees covered — as these are active places of worship
- The Holy Stairs may be climbed only on the knees; a side staircase is available to walk up
- Security checks apply at entrances
- Some areas involve stairs and are not fully wheelchair accessible
- Please arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes early
