Built under the reigns of Septimius Severus and Caracalla, the imperial baths were open to the public and heated through a hypocaust – a brilliant feat of ancient Roman engineering. Navigate through the ruins with an audio guide and see 17 points of interest, including the swimming pool.

As you admire the gymnasium and massage rooms, hear how the complex was important to everyday Roman life as a leisure centre. Take snaps of the preserved mosaics, and find out how stones from the baths were eventually used to construct St Peter’s Basilica.
