Description

You'll enter Notre-Dame with your guide. There's no ticket to buy or entry to pre-reserve; entry to the cathedral is free, and we time the tour so the queue works for you rather than against you.

First, the hour that changes what you see inside. Your guide is a licensed guide-conférencier, the only credential France permits to lead tours inside its national monuments, and they'll take you to 7 points around Île de la Cité worth standing at. The West Façade reads like a book once someone shows you where to start: the Gallery of Kings, the portals that taught scripture to a city that couldn't read. You'll see the flying buttresses that made the height possible, the Emmanuel bell, the towers that held through the night of the fire, and the spot where firefighters made the call that saved the building. Victor Hugo gets his due, since without his novel there might have been nothing left to restore.

Then you go in together. Notre-Dame is a working cathedral: people kneel in the side chapels while you visit, candles are lit for the dead, mass is said. So once you cross the threshold, we let it be what it is. Your guide walks through the nave with your group while you take in the vaults, the rose windows and the restored stonework with an hour of history already in your head. You hear the organ and the quiet of the space, not a headset.

Guests tell us the interior is the part they remember, and it's the part we built the tour around.

The practical side: 70 minutes, groups capped at 7, meeting point two minutes from the cathedral. Your guide takes questions at the exit, and you're welcome to stay inside as long as you like afterwards.

Good to know before you go
  • Your guide's storytelling takes place outside, before you enter. Inside Notre-Dame your guide accompanies your group without speaking, as the cathedral is an active place of worship
  • Entry to Notre-Dame is free for all visitors and we don't sell admission tickets or hold priority access. Queues run from 15 minutes to over an hour between April and October, and we time the tour around the line
  • Shoulders and knees covered for entry to the cathedral
  • Runs in all weather. Bring an umbrella if the forecast turns
  • Not wheelchair accessible due to the historic nature of the site
  • Exceptional closures can happen without notice. Check the official Notre-Dame website before travelling. Refunds aren't available for cathedral closures
