Before becoming a museum in 1793, the Louvre was for centuries one of the main residences of the kings of France. Located in the heart of Paris, it covers 73,000 m² and houses the world’s most extensive collection of artworks, spanning more than 9,000 years of history, from ancient civilizations to the 19th century. The collections are divided into eight departments: Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Islamic Art, Paintings, Sculptures, Decorative Arts.
