DISCOVERING MONT SAINT-MICHEL

The architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay make it the most visited tourist site in Normandy. Mont Saint Michel was classified as a historic monument in 1874, and the site has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1979.

Built between sand and sky, Mont Saint Michel was one of the most fabulous achievements of the Middle Ages. There's no doubt that you'll be astounded by the prowess of its monastic architecture, which seems to emerge from the waters of the Bay. On this tour, you'll discover the medieval city, the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, a major place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, and all the places that make it so famous.

The legend of the origin of Mont Saint-Michel

According to legend, Mont Saint-Michel was founded in 708 after the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, bishop of Avranches, and ordered him to build a church on the rock then known as Mont Tombe. The archangel is said to have insisted three times, going so far as to pierce the bishop's skull to prove his seriousness. In response to these divine visions, Aubert built a first sanctuary on this isolated site, marking the beginning of Mont Tombe's transformation into Mont Saint-Michel. The site soon became a major pilgrimage center and monastic complex, famous for its impressive architecture and spiritual significance.

Magical atmosphere

Mont Saint-Michel exudes a magical, timeless atmosphere that captures the imagination of visitors. Strolling through the cobbled streets of the medieval village, exploring the underground galleries of the fortifications, or watching the sunset from the ramparts, every moment invites contemplation.

Delicious Gastronomy

Mont Saint-Michel's restaurants and cafés offer tasty regional cuisine featuring local produce, including fresh seafood from the bay. Visitors can sample traditional dishes such as Mère Poulard's omelette or the famous galettes bretonnes, while enjoying a breathtaking view of the bay.

For its impressive architecture, its captivating history enriched by legends, or its spellbinding atmosphere, a visit to Mont Saint-Michel promises a memorable experience that will remain etched in visitors' memories.

Our guide will recommend the site's must-see addresses. You'll have plenty of free time to visit Mont Saint-Michel: admire the bay, stroll along the ramparts, wander the steep streets of the village.
