Description

Trace two thousand years of history through the City of London, the ancient square mile where the capital was born. Follow the streets from a Roman river port to the world's great financial centre, with a licensed local guide to unlock the fire, plague, trade and empire layered into every corner.

Start beside Tower Hill, where a surviving stretch of Roman wall still marks the edge of Londinium, then stand before the Tower of London — William the Conqueror's fortress of royal palace, treasury and prison. Here Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard met their end, the Crown Jewels are kept, and the ravens, by legend, still guard the kingdom's fate. At the river you'll take in Tower Bridge, the 1894 engineering marvel whose bascules still lift for passing ships, and hear the long, dramatic story of London Bridge — the city's oldest crossing, once crowded with houses and topped with the severed heads of traitors.

Reach the Monument, Wren's towering column marking the Great Fire of 1666 that began in a baker's shop on Pudding Lane, then step into Leadenhall Market, a breathtaking Victorian arcade of iron and glass built over the very heart of Roman Londinium. Walk on through the Square Mile past the columned Royal Exchange, London's first centre of commerce; the Bank of England — the "Old Lady of Threadneedle Street"; and the Mansion House and Guildhall, twin seats of a city that has guarded its self-government since the Middle Ages.

The walk ends before St Paul's Cathedral, Sir Christopher Wren's soaring Baroque masterpiece, whose great dome survived the Blitz and remains an enduring symbol of the city's endurance.
