Description
What about starting your day off with something spectacular? We leave London and travel to your first stop, the stunning city of Canterbury. This historic hub is renowned for its rich history, medieval architecture, and both religious and cultural significance.
Remember that something spectacular we mentioned? That would be Canterbury Cathedral. As the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury (the leader of the Church of England) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s no wonder it draws endless visitors.
Not only that, but it truly is also a specular feat of engineering and a stunning example of Gothic architecture, from its spires to its stained-glass windows, its crypt to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket.
More than that, the cathedral is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. And perhaps you’ve heard of a little author called Geoffrey Chaucer and his famous collection of stories The Canterbury Tales? These popular stories revolve around a series of characters as they journey on a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Becket.
Beyond the cathedral, you’ll find the city of Canterbury... a labyrinth of medieval streets, charming cafes, fascinating museums and galleries, and more than enough shops to tempt you for your lunch break.
We then pop just down the road to the medieval fortress of Dover Castle. You’ve probably heard of the White Cliffs of Dover... but did you know about the castle? You won’t easily forget it after today. Given its position overlooking the English Channel, it’s no wonder it's renowned for its historical and strategic importance.
Dating back to the 11th century, Dover Castle was constructed by none other than William the Conqueror. Over the centuries, it was expanded and fortified, becoming one of the most formidable strongholds in all of England. Today it’s frequented by visitors and film crews – you may recognize it from films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (2016). You’ll have several hours here to explore all the secrets and history this castle is home to.
There are also options for quick refreshments here and comfort facilities. And what’s next? Obviously, the White Cliffs of Dover. Striking and iconic, these white cliffs are well-known around the world. But how are they so white? It’s due to the soft, white limestone that built up over millions of years to give them this chalky-like texture and appearance.
Throughout history, the cliffs have acted as both a natural fortification for the English coastline and as a symbolic welcome to travelers arriving by sea. They look forward to welcoming you (though from land... obviously).
After gazing out over the Strait of Dover, you say farewell to Kent and head back to London.
