Description
Arizona earns its nickname as the Grand Canyon State, and this two-day trip from Las Vegas is built to show you exactly why. You trade the lights of the Strip for wide desert horizons, mile-deep canyons, and some of the most photographed scenery in the American Southwest, all at a relaxed pace with an overnight stop in the small town of Page. It is an easy way to reach the wild edges of the Colorado Plateau without the long planning or the solo drive, with a guide handling the route while you take in the view.
The first day is built around Grand Canyon National Park, set in the high desert of northwestern Arizona and shaped over millions of years by the Colorado River. You take in the layered red-and-gold cliffs from both the South Rim, with its sweeping, wide-open vistas, and the East Rim, where the perspective shifts and the river threads the canyon floor far below. From there you continue to Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado swings a flawless 360-degree curve through reddish-brown sandstone. National Geographic has named it one of the finest photography spots in the country, and standing at the cliff edge, with deep blue-green water, rust-red rock, and open sky lining up in a single frame, it is easy to see why.
As the light softens you head into Page for a comfortable overnight stay, swapping the trail for a good night's rest before the second half of the trip.
Day two opens with Lower Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon hidden on Navajo land and carved by soft sandstone, flash floods, and wind over countless years. Inside, every glow filters down through narrow cracks at the top, bouncing off the rippled walls to create shifting bands of color that drift from deep amber to soft gold, a space that feels less like sightseeing and more like stepping inside a living sculpture. From there you reach Lake Powell, a vivid blue lake set deep in the red-orange plateau and often described as a fjord within canyon country. When conditions allow, you can trade the shoreline for a kayak and slip through one of its famous narrow channels for an up-close look at the water and stone.
With the canyons behind you, it is time to point the wheels back toward the desert. The scenic drive returns you to Las Vegas with a camera full of red rock, blue water, and wide-open sky, and two of the Southwest's most unforgettable landscapes packed into a single weekend.
