Description
Step into the real Edinburgh behind the Harry Potter books — the city where J.K. Rowling wrote them, and the streets, buildings, and graveyards that inspired the wizarding world you know from the page and screen. With a maximum of 20 guests per tour, you'll get plenty of chances to ask questions and get up close to the story.
Your tour begins with Rowling's own story: how a struggling single mother came to write the best-selling book series in history, right here in Edinburgh. See her actual handprints at the City Chambers, then head to the cafés where she wrote the earliest chapters of the series.
Wander through Greyfriars Kirkyard, one of Edinburgh's oldest graveyards, and search among the weathered headstones for a name you'll recognize immediately: Tom Riddle. Just beyond the kirkyard, see George Heriot's School — a turreted, castle-like building widely believed to be the true visual inspiration for Hogwarts itself.
Walk along Victoria Street, the real-life street whose curved, colorful shopfronts are said to have inspired Diagon Alley, and see the shops that could easily belong in the wizarding world.
Learn the darker, true history behind the story too: Edinburgh Castle's real connection to Scotland's witch trials, and how the city's own history of witches and wizards shaped Rowling's imagination.
Finish at The Mound with a view of the Balmoral Hotel, where Rowling wrote the final words of the very last Harry Potter book — a fitting, full-circle end to a tour that traces her story from first page to last.
Led by expert local guides who know the books as well as the city, this two-hour walking tour blends real Edinburgh history with the magic of the world it inspired — perfect for any Harry Potter fan, young or old.
