Rowling wrote much of the Harry Potter series — a series that would go on to sell over 600 million copies worldwide. Led by an expert local guide and true fan, you'll uncover the real history and dark corners that shaped Rowling's imagination. And because Edinburgh weather is nothing to fear, our tours run rain, hail or shine and never get cancelled.

We begin in the heart of the Old Town on the Royal Mile, its narrow closes and towering tenements feeling like a city where magic could hide just out of sight. Your guide sets the scene with the story of how Rowling arrived as a struggling single mother, and why Edinburgh became her writing refuge. At the City Chambers you'll see her handprints set into the ground, the city's tribute to one of its own.

From there we visit the Elephant House, long dubbed a birthplace of Harry Potter, and step into atmospheric Greyfriars Kirkyard — home to a genuine, centuries-old gravestone bearing the name Tom Riddle. Nearby, turreted George Heriot's School looms like Hogwarts itself, one of the strongest visual inspirations for the school of witchcraft and wizardry.

We wander colourful, curving Victoria Street, widely believed to be a real-life Diagon Alley, before Edinburgh Castle, where your guide turns to Scotland's true and often brutal history of witch trials — a darker layer beneath the magic. We finish on The Mound with views to the Balmoral hotel, where Rowling completed the final book in the series.
