Description
Delft looks like the most peaceful little city in Holland. It is also where a man was shot dead on his own staircase, where the most famous Dutch painter who ever lived died flat broke, and where half the town once blew up in a single afternoon.
I am a local guide, and on this 1.5 hour walk I hand you the whole story. Not a list of dates, but the city itself, on foot, in a small group of maximum 12 people.
We walk the streets that shaped Johannes Vermeer, the "Master of Light," and I'll tell you why a painter that famous died with almost nothing. You'll hear about the assassination of William of Orange, the father of the nation, shot on his own staircase, and the secrets of the Royal Crypts beneath the New Church.
You'll learn about the 200 breweries that once fueled this town, and how a city this small helped run a global trade empire through the VOC. We'll stop at the 17th-century City Hall and its surprisingly dark history as a prison. You'll find out the true (and slightly embarrassing) origins of the world's most famous ceramics, Delft Blue. And you'll meet Hugo Grotius, the local child prodigy who more or less fathered human rights and modern maritime law before most people finish university.
We start at the statue of Hugo Grotius on the Markt square, right in front of the New Church with the black-tipped tower, and we end precisely where we began 1.5 hours later. Fully wheelchair accessible and fit for all ages and energy levels.
No food, drinks or entrance tickets included. Just the stories, the streets, and a local who actually loves telling them.
Book now and I'll see you at the Grotius statue.
