The museum is one of the earliest specialized museums in Europe, founded in 1872.
The museum has endeavored to collect and preserve intangible cultural heritage associated with ethnographic research. The museum has emerged as one of the most important centers in Hungary for museological research and the renewal of ethnographic museology.

- The museum is closed on Mondays
- Last admission is one hour before closing time
- Photography is allowed without flash
- On the 3rd Saturday of each month, permanent exhibitions are free of charge for Hungarian and other EEA nationals who:
- a) are under 26 years of age,
- b) * accompanied by a person under 18 years of age and his/her close relative (up to 2 persons) within the meaning of the Civil Code (hereinafter: Civil Code).
