Description
Most visitors never make it to Óbuda, and that's exactly why it's worth the detour. Long before Budapest existed as one city, this was Aquincum, a Roman settlement, and centuries later it became the quiet riverside district where locals still gather for Sunday lunch. On this Secret Food Tours walk, you'll trace that history one plate at a time, weaving through cobbled streets where Baroque facades sit beside Roman ruins, guided by someone who treats the neighbourhood like an extension of their own kitchen.
The tasting stops read like a tour through Hungarian comfort food itself. You'll start light, with flaky strudel and freshly baked bread, before moving into heartier territory: lángos, the deep-fried flatbread every Hungarian grew up eating on weekends, and a bowl of proper gulyás soup, the dish that put Hungarian cooking on the map. Along the way, you'll try Hungarian sausages or pork knuckle, tangy pickles to cut through the richness, and a shot of pálinka, the fruit brandy locals reach for after a good meal, not before.
What makes this walk different is the pace: nine or more tastings spread across small, family-run spots that have been feeding this neighbourhood for generations, not tour groups. Your guide fills in the gaps between bites: why Óbuda was settled first, how it stayed independent from Buda and Pest for so long, and why locals still consider it the city's best-kept culinary secret. Coffee closes things out at a local café, the kind of stop where regulars know the owner by name.
And somewhere along the route, there's a Secret Dish waiting... We won't tell you what it is. That part's for the tour!
