Description

From the moment we meet at the foot of the National Monument on Dam Square, your guide will greet you with a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the day’s plan. We start by checking your equipment—whether you have a DSLR, mirrorless camera, advanced compact or smartphone—and fine-tuning your basic settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) so you’re ready to capture Amsterdam’s changing light.

Our first stop brings us to the tranquil Begijnhof. Please note: for our 9 AM tour, the inner courtyard is still closed. Instead, we'll explore the beautiful surrounding area, rich with historic buildings and picturesque alleys—a hidden gem in the city center.

On later tours, we will enter the courtyard itself. This offers a fantastic challenge for smartphone photography (as DSLRs are not allowed), focusing on composition and capturing the serene atmosphere.

From the quiet courtyard, we’ll step into the lively atmosphere of Spui square. Our route then takes us through a hidden alley, the 'Dubbele Worststeeg', which opens up to the majestic Herengracht. Here, we'll dive into capturing those quintessential Amsterdam canal scenes. I’ll point out how to use reflections in the water, symmetry from bridges, and leading lines to frame the iconic gabled houses. Our walk continues past the vibrant Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market), a splash of color perfect for practicing with detail shots, before we head towards the lively Reguliersdwarsstraat.

Our journey continues to two of Amsterdam's most picturesque viewpoints: the Aluminiumbrug and the famous Staalmeestersbrug, where you'll have a classic view of the Zuiderkerk tower. This is the perfect spot to practice composing for depth and balance. I’ll demonstrate how to read your camera’s histogram to avoid overexposed highlights in the sky or clipped shadows in the canal water, ensuring a perfectly exposed photograph.

As we circle back toward Dam Square via the area around the Zuiderkerk, I’ll share quick tips for on-the-go post-processing using your camera’s custom profiles or popular mobile editing apps. You’ll discover simple ways to apply matte-curve treatments, enhance color contrast and add subtle film-style grain—all without needing a full desktop workflow.

Throughout the 2 - 2½-hour walk, you’ll receive personalized feedback tailored to your skill level and equipment. We'll review your shots directly on your camera's screen along the way. By the end, you’ll have captured a diverse portfolio of Amsterdam scenes—from hidden courtyards to grand canal views—and you’ll walk away with new skills and confidence.

Please note: This tour is flexible. We can always pause for a coffee at a charming café along our route. Moreover, if you have a specific place in mind you're dreaming of photographing, please tell me. I would love to adapt the tour to include it!
