Description
H’ART Museum is a an art museum where famous works of art and stories from around the world are brought together in one-of-a-kind exhibitions.
The museum is located in a historical landmark, at the heart of the Dutch capital. A cultural oasis – with a unique indoor garden and a bustling Grand Café – where constantly many interesting things are going on, from concerts, lectures and movie nights to art education for children and young adults.
Now on view: Happy Birthday Amsterdam
Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th birthday, and H’ART Museum is kicking off festivities with a gift to the city: the brand-new exhibition Happy Birthday Amsterdam, in which 75 artists of the past and present pay tribute to this vibrant capital.
Amsterdam has been host to many artists throughout the centuries. Known as the place to be for free and creative spirits, the city was and remains a hotspot for creators from all over the world. To celebrate this, Happy Birthday Amsterdam presents a colourful and rich collection of artworks about, by and for the city.
Rather than a historical overview, the exhibition is a festive ode to Amsterdam and the creatives who lived, worked and resided there. Sometimes their whole lives, sometimes just passing through, but all of them contribute(d) to the image we have of the city today. From Karel Appel to Marina Abramović to Johan Cruijff through the eyes of Marlene Dumas.
The museum has always housed some of the most unique and famous art from antiquity to the present day. Connecting the art world in new ways and bringing it to Amsterdam for everyone to enjoy.
Historically, the building began as a Diaconie Oude Vrouwen Huys in 1683, a sanctuary for displaced older city ladies. In 1817 places also were made available for men. Until the 20th Century, the church hall in the home was the second largest in the city and regularly used for worship. Winston Churchill even set foot in the building alongside the Amstel River, renamed the ‘Amstelhof’ in 1953.
In 2009 the museum formerly known as Hermitage opened its doors to public from loans from the treasury of the St Petersburg Hermitage, a museum in Russia.
Since 2023, it is called H'ART Museum with loans from Centre Pompidou, British Museum and Smithsonian American Art Museum ( SAAM). bringing artworks all over the world in unique exhibitions.
The museum has to date, welcomed in excess of 5 million visitors, presented more than 30 varied and inspirational exhibitions.
We believe Great Art Sparks Hearts.
